How to Make Kick FX

How to make your own kick effects. They're a really big part of hardstyle, and any hardstyle producer should know how to make them. I start with the basics and then show a few techniques so you can develop your own sound.

    01

A kick effect is a preset in your playlist

    Watch 1:08

When you're working on a kick effect, you're working on a preset in your playlist. That sounds really weird, but that's how I like to see it. You have a sample, you load it into your mixer, you add automation clips, then you add distortion and EQ and you get a kick effect.

Once you've made that, you can just change a few knobs. Because it's distorted really heavily, a really small change before the distortion plugin results in a really drastic sound. Tweak an automation clip a little bit more and you get a super different sound.

    02

Filter the sample before the distortion

    Watch 2:26

With no effects at all the sample sounds really bad. So I add an EQ, boost one or two knobs and put the frequency of both on an automation clip, so they move together. It's just filtering. But because the distortion comes after this really big filter, that's how you get the kick effect.

Then remove bass. That's the biggest part. If you remove bass before a distortion plugin, it's not as muddy. Find the frequencies that are annoying, then add the distortion. WaveShaper is great, just boost it. After that, make sure your mix is right with a compressor, a limiter to remove the peaks, less bass and some high end.

Change the automation clip or the sample

    Watch 4:33

The first thing you can do is change the automation clip. Make an LFO of it, just change it, or tweak the minimum and maximum amount. Different stuff happens when you do that.

The second thing is change the sample. I know you've made this kick and it sounds dope, but you can just take another kick. Change the pitch, it might sound doper at another pitch. Do the pogo, reverse it, make it shorter or longer.

    Crazy effects before the distortion

    Watch 5:23

Great plugins for going from a basic sound into an experimental one, without distorting too much, are Rift, CamelPhat and CamelCrusher. They work with presets, sample rate stuff, filters, phasers. It's really inspiring. Then you add the distortion and the EQ and you have a different sound. Fruity Phaser is fine, Fruity Chorus is fine. Just add stuff that really changes the way the sample sounds.

That's also how you get a lot of samples. Load something in, render each version and make a big folder. For your song you suddenly have 30 samples to drag and drop in.
