    My notes from this video

    01

Change the pitch and the pitching method

    Watch 1:13

The first thing you can do is change the pitch. That's really obvious. But based on the sound you want, change the pitching method too. Auto is one sound. Switch it to Stretch and you get another type of sound. Each pitch method has its own characteristic sound, so play around with each.

Then there's the multiplicator time stretch. I make it longer when I only want the tok of the kick at one point of the kick roll, or shorter for a really quick one. Combine it with the pitch and you can do so many things.

    Pogo for gated kicks

    Watch 3:07

This knob here, pogo, is really really important. You can make really gated kicks with it. This is huge.

Boost is just clip distortion and the EQ is post-processing, so I only use those a little bit. Take these four, the pogo, the pitch, the time stretch and the pitching method, and you basically have everything you need.

Leave a little room between the kicks

    Watch 5:06

Everyone makes the kicks like this, back to back, and then rolls them. I'd suggest leaving a little bit of small room between each kick, because it accentuates each kick a little bit more. It's unnoticeable. But if you make it back to back and put mastering effects on it, it just gets a little bit more muddy.

Make unique before you edit a kick

    Watch 6:12

This is also really important. If you create a kick roll, click on the clip and click Make unique. It duplicates the sample, so you can put effects on this one without changing the others.

Then I double click it and create an automation clip of the volume. That's a funny effect. Make unique again for a reverse kick, then one pitched up three and one pitched down three.

    Keep the rhythm predictable

    Watch 7:49

People need to get familiar with the sound you're creating. The rhythm needs to be predictable, and if it's not predictable, you don't have a nice kick roll. On a festival people want to move on the beat and feel like they control the kicks.

You do this by seeing whatever your screech or your break is doing and copying that rhythm a little bit, so it goes in harmony. Then accentuate the kick roll with crashes or other effects to make sure people follow the rhythm.
