Screeches in Vital

I'll walk you through everything you need to know to make screeches in Vital. It's a free plugin and the interface is a little rough to get used to, but once you know it you can create really unique sounds, because you can assign all these envelopes and LFOs to whatever knob you want.

    My notes from this video

    01

A fast LFO on the fine tune

    Watch 1:22

What I always like to do is take an LFO and put it at a very high rate. Put it on seconds, at something like 0.055, and assign it to the fine tune. Then make it bipolar so it stays in pitch. If I don't, it just vibrates on one side of the fine tune. You want it in the center.

You can add it to every oscillator, and to the detune too, so it's even more detuned. Create a lot of chaos with one very fast LFO and detune everything a lot.

Crank the drive in front of the distortion

    Watch 3:14

The thing with Vital compared to Serum is that there's no zero square mode, so the distortion is kind of limited. Hard clip is pretty cool, but the extreme distortion isn't available.

To bypass that, I crank open the drive in all the filters that come before the distortion, and the same with the multiband compressor. That pushes the gain in front of the distortion, so you get more distortion.

    03

A resonant filter with an envelope

    Watch 4:11

Use a very resonant filter and you get this pitch sound into the screech. I put an envelope on the filter, then take the same envelope to the global voice transpose and set it to 24, that's two octaves up. Now you can control the tone a little bit.

A lot of resonance generates a key for you. If I play this in G, it doesn't mean the sound is in G, because that depends on the cutoff range you choose. Render your screech, see what key it is and pitch it to your kick or your melody.

LFO 1 on Osc 1 Tune (bipolar), Env 2 on the filter cutoff and on Voice Transpose at 24.

Chorus, flanger and phaser before the distortion

    Watch 5:34

What really helps is putting stuff in front of the distortion. A chorus, a flanger or a phaser, because these three create different effects. For a wider screech I put the chorus at 16 voices with a very slow tempo, 32/1. Then I take the feedback down to zero or a little bit, because I want it static.

The phaser is a really cool effect. Having it before the distortion totally changes everything about your screech.
