How to make this screech. I go through every step you have to do to get to this point in Serum.

    My notes from this video

    01

One envelope on the pitch and the volume

    Watch 0:18

I start by creating an envelope. It goes to the matrix and then to the master tune, so I assign envelope 2 to global master tune. Set the amount on 19, because 19 is an octave in Serum. Then I assign the same envelope to the volume, to make sure no volume is playing after the screech is done.

Next I open a simple other waveform in oscillator B, reduce the volume and select FM from B. Add the envelope to that as well and you can already hear the screech coming alive. Then I start adding distortion. The maximum distortion you can get out of Serum is Zero-Square.

Play around in the two filters

    Watch 2:28

Really important here is that it doesn't matter what you do at this point. You can just be creative and play around. The coolest part happens when you go into your filter. There are two filters in Serum, and with the latest Serum update there's some really cool stuff, like the reverb, all pass and comb filters.

I boost the drive and the comb frequency, and set the cutoff to my liking. Then I add an LFO to the cutoff, because I want it to move around a bit. On the second filter I like to use the reverb filter, with the mix not on 100. It doesn't need to overpower the sound.

Automate the filters before the distortion

    Watch 4:45

In the playlist I want the first part to be really crunchy and then open up. I'm just moving the knobs, and when something sounds cool I create an automation clip for that knob. I want the filter to boost the bass first, so the bass gets really distorted, and then it opens up. I also put filter resonance on a macro and automate that. Huge difference.

The cool stuff happens when you start moving knobs on filters before the distortion. So make sure you're adding effects before the distortion. If I put it afterwards, nothing happens, because it's not distorted.
