Distorted Hardstyle Lead Vocals

A few methods to create distorted lead vocals, which are used a lot in hardstyle. There's a few things you need to know, and if you know those, you can start using your own techniques.

    Distorted in a clean way

    Watch 5:32

You need a vocal sample, a nice one shot, and you want it really distorted in a clean way. It needs to be a clean vocal, but it does need to be distorted. And it needs a really spacey reverb. I imagine this thing going all around your headphones.

The first thing is just getting a bit of distortion on it. Then a parametric EQ to remove a little bit of the bass. Add another distortion, then another EQ in front and one behind, just to get the bass gone again. If you go higher you get a really weird sound. A little bit lower and you get this resonating effect.

Glue it down and add a little unison

    Watch 6:28

It all depends on your project, so don't render it. Just keep it there. Once you've made a pattern, you might see the frequencies clash with your mid intro kick.

Boost the mid frequencies before your distortion. Then take a compressor and glue it down a little bit. I put it around 12, 15. It just gets a little bit more squashed together. Then I add OTT to get it tighter. What I recommend is adding a vocal doubler, because it creates a little bit of unison. You don't want it to be too much.

Loop one part of the vocal

    Watch 7:10

What usually happens is you have a build-up going and the vocal loops a certain part. "I wanna, I wanna" stops there, then it takes the full vocal, "I wanna go home", and then it's boom boom boom boom.

The first method is just to take a vocal and find a loop that works in your song. I found this vocal in Galactic Hardstyle Vocals Vol. 1. It says "free fall all the time" and ends on a pretty nice note, so I loop "time time time". Then get it into the right key.

A formant shifter when it gets too low

    Watch 8:04

There's an issue, it's too low. That's the thing you work out once you're working on it. So I add a formant shifter. Little AlterBoy works fine, I just put it up a little bit. Then a reverb and delay bus as a send. That's just instant proper reverb and delay.

Then I get rid of the sidechain just in front of the vocal, because it needs to instantly open there.
