Sub Zero Project Type Rawphoric Kick

I made a rawphoric melodic kick like Sub Zero Project and I'll explain what I did, going from punch to bass to full kick. I'm not Sub Zero Project, so I can't 100% recreate their kicks. Use the techniques in your own kicks and make something unique from it.

    My notes from this video

    01

Start the punch in a VST

    Watch 3:14

I use Serum. Make an LFO, an envelope, add it to the master tune and just open it up. You have a basic 909 kind of kick. Then the fun part starts and you add effects. To get a tok out of it, take a filter in Serum, a comb filter, and just add it. You immediately get that tok sound.

The important thing is that because I use the VST, I can easily tweak it. Add your EQ and distortion in the mixer, then tweak the VST preset a little bit and try to find a sweet spot. Don't work with renders. Just add it to the next channel.

Boost the key of your song

    Watch 4:48

When I process the punch, I boost the frequency of the key of my song. That's a really important thing. You can also boost a frequency of your kick that you really like and make an automation clip that only plays at the beginning. Then you get a punchy spike at the start.

Just make sure your tok is not too distorted. If you boost the key of your tune and then add distortion, it gets distorted really easily.

    03

Make the bass tail longer than one beat

    Watch 14:13

I create a good sub by making a sine wave, a noise and distortion in one VST. Then I add movement with an automation clip that boosts the sub at the beginning of the bass tail and lets it go down. If you boost the sub before the distortion, you get that wow sound.

Your bass tail should be longer than one beat. I'm at 150 BPM and I made it longer than one beat, so the automation clip can be a little longer too. Then in the render I made it shorter, so the movement from all the frequency automation clips gets pulled into the kick.

    04

    Play with the phase

    Watch 15:18

Stack the same bass render on top of each other, add one an octave up and find the sweet spot. I duplicate it two times. One copy gets pitched up 12 semitones and the other is the same but placed at another spot. You get different sounds, so you might like one more than the other. This is a really good tip.

I do the same with the crunch layer later on. The phase is so important. It completely changes the kick.

    05

Stretch the tail in Nimble Kick

    Watch 16:00

Now comes the dope tip. Take your rendered kick and put it into Nimble Kick. Find the right tail and stretch it. It sounds a little bit longer, and this type of sound is really nice to have because it suddenly creates crunch in your kick. Then you render it and put it back in.

For an extra crunch layer I duplicate that render, keep just the ending part and make it a little bit shorter. Some volume automation helps it blend in.
