How to Use the Asymmetrical Wave Shaper in Serum 2 for Oldschool Kicks

I wish I knew this when I started making hardstyle kicks in Serum 2. It comes with a lot of different distortion modes, and one of them is an asymmetrical wave shaper.

My notes from this Short

01

Drive blends shape A and shape B

I put the asymmetrical wave shaper somewhere in the chain of a simple oldschool kick. The drive is the blend between how you shape A and how you shape B. If I put it on 100%, it's 100% B.

The left side is the negative side of the waveform and the right side is the positive side.

02

Shape only the positive side

If you want crunch in your oldschool kicks, you use asymmetrical distortion. First I make sure the left side isn't being wave shaped, so I put this point exactly in the middle. Then I shape the right side, and play around with the point to see how it influences the kick.

03

Volume after the wave shaper, then the curves

Adding volume after the wave shaper helps to get the power back in your kick. Then play around with the curves. One curve gets you more drive, another hollows out the kick a bit.

You can also play around with the left side a bit, so you asymmetrically distort the negative part of the waveform too.
