How to Set Up Punch Reverb for Hardstyle Kicks in FL Studio

Punch reverb can really make or break your hardstyle or rawstyle kicks. Here's a basic setup that will help you get results easily.

My notes from this Short

01

Route the punch to its own reverb channel

I have a punch and a rumble, and both go together into one final mixing bus. Instead of adding reverb right on the punch channel like most people do, route the punch to an extra mixer channel, and route that to the final mixer channel as well.

02

Wet reverb, OTT and an EQ

First, reverb. Fruity Reeverb is great. Take down the dry so it's only wet reverb, 50 percent. Open the high cut so we don't have any filtering, change the color to bright for a bit more high frequencies, and increase the decay for a longer tail.

Second, OTT to pull the reverb out and add more power and brightness. Decrease the depth and the upward and downward compression to take the effect down a little. Third, an EQ with a low pass to cut the highs and a high pass to remove the lows. This cleans up the reverb and leaves a bit of the highs for the crunch itself.

Automate a gain knob after the punch

Finally, automate any gain knob, so you control how the reverb blends with your punch. One shape makes it start where the punch ends. Another can make it open on a triplet or even on a half beat.

What I like to do sometimes is add a bit of reverb during the punch to make it a bit smoother. You won't notice it much, but it does help.
