How to Make the Low Crunch for Gated Kicks

When you make gated kicks, the low crunch is the hardest part, and this is a nice way to start out.

My notes from this Short

01

Stretch the bass into a sub

I take a kick, select only the bass, make it longer and put it on auto. Now you can play around with the pogo and the pitch range to create a sub to your liking.

02

Punch reverb layers on the sub

The trick with gated kicks is to combine punch reverb with the sub you just created. Feel free to create different reverb layers: mid reverb, high reverb and direct punch reverb.

For the mid reverb I remove the highs, then combine it with the crunch and add more distortion.

03

All the reverbs on one channel

Then I bring in the high reverb, get all of these in one channel and add even more distortion and reverb, and your crunch will be much wider. After that I add the direct punch reverb and the punch.

Then change the balance between all the reverbs and play around with EQ and distortion until you find a crunch that's very wide.
