How to Bring Back the Transient of a Hardstyle Kick Punch

Here's a simple way to improve the transient of the punch in your total kick.

My notes from this Short

01

A compressor leaves a spike in the punch

I put a punch, a crunch and a reverb through a soft clipper and an inflator. It's squashed against 0 dB and the punch is a little bit overwhelmed. To fix it I use compression, and to see what happens I use the dynamics in iZotope Trash.

I take the ratio to 4 and compress a lot, just to see what happens. It takes around 10 milliseconds for the compression to hit, and it leaves a little bit of a spike in the punch. Then I take it back down to normal levels and make sure I can still see that spike.

02

One more soft clipper against 0 dB

Now I bring back the power with one more soft clipper, squashing it against 0 dB. Don't do it too much. This introduces a little bit of a transient in your punch, which helps it punch through the mix.
