How Detune, Width and Distortion Shape a Hardstyle Screech

If you understand this part about screeches, your life gets a lot easier. It comes down to the voices, the detune, how they phase together, the width and the distortion.

My notes from this Short

01

Voices, detune, width and distortion play together

Most people just throw on some voices, add some detune and call it a day. But the best screeches are made by understanding how the voices in your detune, the width of your detune and the distortion play together.

If I add three voices, detune them and add a lot of distortion, I have a pretty good screech.

02

Take the width down to mono

I can accentuate that clashing detuned sound by taking down the width. That puts all of the voices into mono, which makes them easier to phase with each other and react with the distortion.

Serum 2 unison settings on oscillator A for a hardstyle screech: 3 voices with the unison width taken down to 0, so all voices play in mono
Width down to 0 puts all three voices in mono.
03

Small tweaks in front of the distortion

Once you have this, play around with the amount of voices and take the blend down. Then add small tweaks in front of your distortion. A common technique is to add a phaser and make an LFO move through the cutoff.

Because we took the width down, we can easily take that back by taking down the hyper, so we don't have any detune, and opening the dimension. You can tweak small things and completely change your screech.
