How to Make a Simple Gated Kick

Gated kicks are easier to make than you think they are. This is a very easy way to make one.

My notes from this Short

01

The punch with a 100% reverb channel

The first thing we need is a punch. I make this punch go into an empty channel with 100% reverb, and I control the volume.

The punch and the reverb go together into one channel. In there I add OTT, a corrective EQ if needed and an inflator to squash the punch together.

02

A crunch from a stretched kick bass

For the crunch I load in a kick sample, select the bass part, make the bass longer and change the pitch to my liking. This is where we make and break the kick.

Then I add clipping, more distortion, some compression and a corrective EQ, clear up the 300 hertz and boost the highs to make it more present. I add a soft clipper to really squash it, and an inflator.

FabFilter Pro-Q 3 as the corrective EQ in a gated kick chain: a narrow bell cut at 309.17 Hz, -9.02 dB with a Q of 4.263
The corrective EQ clears up the 300 Hz range.
